Silver State Stitch Shop is the arts and craft brainchild of Jessica (Ruiz) Whittaker, a lovely woman who has been quilting since she took a class on a whim when she was 18. What was a fun hobby quickly became a profitable (and still fun!) side hustle for Jessica, throughout college, and as she’s gotten married to Brian, and grown her family. Now she’s filling a need in the fiber arts community – Boulder City and beyond! – as a provider of supplies for cross stitch and all types of quilting. She fondly recalls Fiddlesticks and Ann’s Craft Cottage from growing up here in Boulder City, and she hopes to serve her customers who have been missing both of those favorite spots.
Both cross stitch and quilting have been making a major comeback as cottagecore became so popular during the pandemic. Makers everywhere have advanced the arts by innovating new products and techniques and we saw some amazingly cool things on our recent visit to the shop. Now, we are admittedly aficionados of the aesthetic and fabric and notions make up positively giddy. You will get your “fabric fix” at Silver State Stitch Shop (she’s already got some Independence Day and Halloween fabric in stock! Yay!). She will be carrying all kinds of pretty fabrics, patterns, threads and notions to not only begin your latest project, but also provide the encouragement to finish up some projects you may have hiding around the house.
One of the services offered at Silver State is longarm finishing. Don’t know what that is? It’s a method of finishing larger projects that can’t be readily completed on a regular sewing machine due to their size and complexity. Jessica’s long arm machine is very impressive and can be operated manually, or by computer. We can’t wait to see it in action as she assists local makers with getting their quilts finished properly.
We were really impressed with some of the latest finds in the cross stitch area. Jessica has stocked all kinds of wonderful things including some absolutely stunning cross stitch fabrics. We fell in love with a sparkly fabric and tried to photograph it but we couldn’t do it justice. You really need to see this for yourself! There’s custom hand dyed fabric, and of course, all the DMC floss you could want!
For those of you new to the hobby/passion, Jessica plans to offer classes in the fall or winter, once she gets her feet under her. There’s plenty of classroom space for customers to bring in their work and get advice from her and others. She assures us that quilting is a skill anyone can pick up because all you need to do for the most basic projects is simply sew in a straight line! Of course there is room for more advanced participants and customers are invited to come up to the store and work on projects in the stitch room.
The store is located at 1000 Nevada Way, Suite 107, in the same shopping center as Yarn Over BC. If you can’t make it on Wednesday, the regular hours for the store will be daily, 10:00AM to 4:30PM, with the exception of Wednesday and Sunday when the store will be closed.
