It may feel more like winter today, with the blustery winds and cooler temperatures, but we have officially entered fall or autumn season as of September 22. This is one of the “short seasons” here in Nevada that never seems to last long enough! But we have a fantastic fall photography from reader Brian Olsen. He captured a great view of leaves on a carpet of grass beneath the trees of Wilbur Square.
Did you know the reason leaves change color is because “As night length increases in the autumn, chlorophyll production slows down and then stops and eventually all the chlorophyll is destroyed. The carotenoids and anthocyanin that are present in the leaf are then unmasked and show their colors.” You can learn more about this process and the typical fall leaf colors for specific species from t he US Department of Agriculture HERE.
