A local school committee is seeking Boulder City’s input regarding the possible consolidation and/or reconstruction of the local primary schools and junior high school. Last year, the Clark County School District (CCSD) floated the idea of constructing a Kindergarten thru eight grade building at one of the existing school sites. This proposal was met with a great deal of concern by many parents and CCSD tabled the decision until additional community meetings could be held.
The School Operations Team (SOT) at AJ Mitchell Elementary School, the city’s pre-Kindergarten thru second grade campus, is currently seeking input from parents and members of the community via an online survey found HERE. Respondents are asked a handful of questions about their preferences for school alignments and improvements going forward.
Student populations at the primary schools have remained relatively steady over the last five years. The junior high school, however, is operating at 50% capacity and had previously been designated for reconstruction, as was AJ Mitchell Elementary School. This caused the district to look at its two primary schools as well, as consolidation would be fiscally responsible, if the population trends continued.
Here is a brief summary of the current campuses:
- AJ Mitchell Elementary School serves pre K thru second grades. It was built in 1970. It is located at 900 Avenue B.
- MP King Elementary School serves third thru fifth grades. It was constructed in 1991. It is located at 888 Adams Boulevard.
- EM Garrett Junior High School serves sixth thru eighth grades. it was built in 1978. It is located at 1200 Avenue G.
- Boulder City High School serves ninth thru twelfth grades. It was built in 1949, but has been mostly reconstructed and is not the subject of the study. it is located at 1101 Fifth Street.
The survey is for information gathering only. The data will be gathered and compiled for future meetings with the district.
