Today we’re visiting with second-time historical author, Tiana Marie to share with you her latest publication, “Boulder City in WWII”, and it’s an amazing book! In case you’ve missed previous articles, we’ve learned that there are nearly two dozen (or more!) authors locally here in town. We created this series to share the authors stories and to let all of you – prospective readers – get to hear about their works. (If you’ve missed our previous columns, we’ve got links for you at the bottom of this page.) Please enjoy the following interview with the author!
Please share a short bio to introduce yourself.
I’m a native Nevadan, author, historian, and photographer with a lifelong passion for history – whether through words, images, or preserved artifacts. My work spans historic preservation, military history, polemology, and museum education, with a focus on supporting archival and interpretive efforts in cultural institutions.
When I’m not writing or researching, you’ll find me in the yard at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, working among the massive locomotives that power the stories of the past. I also assist fellow museum professionals in collections, programming, and preservation work.
Outside of professional life, I’m a dedicated supporter of my daughter’s Olympic pursuits, a lover of good books, traveling, and hiking trails. My writing is shaped by the echoes of history, and the deep belief that every artifact—and every person—has a story worth telling.
Please tell us about the book(s) you’ve written and a short synopsis.
New Release: Boulder City in World War II (2025)
Description: During the early years of World War II, the United States Army established a camp on the federal reservation in Boulder City, Nevada. This camp consisted of barracks, a mess hall, officer quarters, a hospital, a guardhouse, a commissary, and a theater for several hundred men. Most of the men were being trained for military police duty. The citizens of Boulder City were not aware of much of the activity that took place at Camp Williston as they were finally settling down into everyday life after the construction of Hoover Dam. On December 7, 1941, though, the town of Boulder City had the busiest Army camp in the West. Established only a decade earlier in 1931, the camp’s “Be Generous, Equal Victory” slogan was one the community lived by, even more so throughout the war effort.

Boulder City Past and Present (2021)
Description: During the midst of the Great Depression, Boulder City came to life due to the Boulder Dam project, which offered people a path of hope. This wonderful town’s heritage does not end at its buildings or sites, for they are just the icing to a richer culture. Standing in present time with images of their past will allow those in the community or newcomers a fresh view on the preservation efforts and care that Boulder City represents.

What inspired you to write it?
Growing up surrounded by the legacy of military service, with family members who have served and currently serving, in every branch of the armed forces, I developed a deep respect for the sacrifices made by those who defend our country. This book is dedicated to honoring the people of Boulder City, whose contributions during the Second World War played a vital role in shaping the community and the nation.
Though the stories of those who lived and served here are countless, this work offers a glimpse into their resilience and spirit. It is my hope that these pages serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made, the lives changed, and the enduring legacy of service that continues to define this town.
What do you hope your readers experience or learn from reading your work?
It is my sincere hope that readers will be inspired to engage with their local Auxiliary and Legion posts, exploring how they can contribute to the ongoing efforts of supporting those who serve. Furthermore, I aim for this book to offer a deeper understanding of the crucial role a community plays on the home front, standing strong in support while others serve in distant lands.
When and how did you publish it?

What events in your life contributed to your becoming an author?
My passion for writing is rooted in a deep love of books, reading, history, and the pursuit of continuous learning, all of which have inspired my journey to becoming an author.
Did you take any formal or informal classes or seminars in writing? What would you say to other would-be authors about the process of writing?
Throughout my early years, I had the opportunity to study various writing courses, each contributing to my development as an author. I believe that anyone with a genuine passion and the willingness to write from the heart can be an author. Whether crafting fiction or nonfiction, the key lies in finding what you love and allowing your thoughts to flow freely onto the page
How long have you lived in Boulder City? What do you like most about living here?
I have had the privilege of calling Boulder City home for over a decade. Before making this town my residence, I lived just across the border in Henderson, frequently spending time in Boulder City—whether working at Hoover Dam or visiting for events, shopping, and exploration. What continues to draw me to this community is its small-town charm, rich cultural heritage, and significant history.
Any other thoughts you’d like our readers to know about you or your work?
Immerse yourself in the study of history and engage with the aspects that captivate you. With genuine passion and curiosity, you’ll find that there is always more to uncover, revealing a wealth of stories waiting to be explored.
