24-Hour Remembrance of 9/11

So the request doesn’t get lost in all the details I’ve included about the 24-Hour Remembrance of 9/11 being planned — let me first pass along the request from our American Legion post that all red-shirt (Support the Troops) wearers are asked to wear their shirts this Friday AND on Sunday, September 11th.

Having said that…Fan Jean Norman emailed me a wealth of information about the 24-Hour Remembrance event being planned on Saturday, Sept. 10th and Sunday, Sept. 11th. I’m going to paste in her entire email below for you so I don’t leave anything out:

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church will hold a 24-hour vigil to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. About 3,000 people died when four planes crashed that day—two into the Twin Towers in New York, bringing them down, one into the Pentagon and one into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overwhelmed the hijackers.

From 9:11 a.m. Sept. 10 to 9:11 a.m. Sept. 11, names of victims will be read, prayers offered, and remembrances heard. Activities to help children learn about the events of that day, organized by parents of Grace Christian Academy, will be available in the parish hall.

The opening ceremony at 9:11 a.m. Sept. 10 will include posting of the colors by Boulder City Girl Scouts and remarks by Boulder City Police Chief Thomas Finn. The closing service, from 8:45 to 9:11 a.m. Sept. 11, will include retiring of the colors by the VFW and a proclamation by Boulder City Mayor Roger Tobler.

Boulder City cabaret singer Michael Miele will sing a tribute at 6 p.m. Sept. 10, and Boulder City Circle founders Philip Marcus Esser and Nancy Porter will perform and read names at 7 p.m. Other musicians may also perform throughout the vigil.

A special Mass for the victims of 9/11 will be said at 9:11 p.m.

Community groups are invited to participate in the vigil. Volunteers also are still being recruited to read names throughout the day and night.

Any community member who would like to play a part in this event should call 293-4275 and leave a message for the Rev. Jim Lyons. St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, one of Boulder City’s oldest churches, is at 812 Arizona St.
