Hunter Moore Returns from National Competition

Hunter Moore is a champion. That much has been determined, particularly in the last season of wrestling for Boulder City High School, where he racked up a number of accolades, including the regional and state championships in the 160lb weight class. He was recently selected to attend a national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, where top wrestlers from all over the United States would be competing in various styles of wrestling. The competition he went to, the 2022 US Marine Corps Juniors and 16U Nationals, is sponsored by USA Wrestling and offers competition in freestyle and Greco-Roman style wrestling at this tournament. Alex competed against 256 competitors in the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions and placed 32nd in the entire country in both styles! Equally important, he spent an entire week getting to know other young athletes, discuss training, and get motivated to get better. Hunter said he really enjoyed his trip and experiences.

As a senior this year, Hunter is narrowing down his college choices. He has a few in mind, but there are others he would like to visit before signing his official Letter of Intent. It’s hard to say who will be getting the better deal in the exchange: Hunter with the chance to obtain a degree in nursing or his college wrestling team who receives a superior student-athlete in the truest sense of the word, as Hunter has a 4.4 grade point average.

Hunter, the son of Alex and Andrea Moore, and younger brother of Hayden Moore is the kind of athlete college coaches dream of. He’s a hard worker, on and off the mat, he’s respectful and humble, he’s a leader of teammates and responsible young man. We asked him what he was doing to prepare for his final high school year of wrestling. This is his daily schedule most days:

  • Wakes up at 4:30AM to drive to Las Vegas to wrestle and work out with his club team, Aniciete Training Club (ATC), a highly regarded local program, located near Clark High School.
  • Drives back home, showers, eats breakfast, and heads to a full day of classes at Boulder City High School.
  • Practices after school (in season) with his high school wrestling team.
  • Goes back to ATC to train from 6:30PM to 7:30PM.
  • Returns home to complete his homework for the day.
  • Goes to sleep and starts the disciplined routine over again.

This young man is relentless when it comes to improving on his skills. His coaches call him “coachable”, which is a high compliment. Hunter wants to do whatever possible to increase his skill level and contribute to the success of the Boulder City High School program. He specifically mentioned Coach Jim Cox, who guides the young men of the wrestling program, provides him with training on the mat, but also the intangibles that are so important outside the gym. Things like eating well, weight training, mental health and preparedness. Hunter takes this all in stride as he seems older than his years.

You won’t have to wait long to see Hunter in action — he’s also the Boulder City High School Eagles varsity football team’s running back and linebacker and he throws himself into giving his all on the football team on the field as well. A talented, well-rounded athlete, Hunter also played baseball for a while before devoting more time to his wresting career.

His goals for the future are to find a quality college wrestling program where he can continue to dominate and improve. His favorite high school class is anatomy, which is crucial to his future career in nursing. He wants to continue to make his family and community proud, which we think will be an easy win for Hunter. He also credits his parents, brother, coaches, and teammates for helping him to achieve his success. He takes his sports seriously but says it’s important to have fun while you’re playing a sport and not take yourself too seriously.

Hunter represents the type of young person who makes our town so proud and we wish him all the success in his future, both on the mat and off! Make sure to catch some of his athletic exploits in football HERE and wrestling HERE.
