Community Meeting Identifies Needs

CommunityMeeting Boulder City Nevada

A recent community meeting for the residents of Boulder City was held last Thursday at the Senior Center. The well-attended meeting was coordinated by representatives from Boulder City Hospital, the City of Boulder City, and Nevadans for the Cojkon Good. The goal of the meeting was to identify issues facing Boulder City.

After a welcome by Father Ron Zanoni, speakers from different organization introduced themselves and gave opening remarks. They included Anna Eng of Nevadans for the Common Good, Barbara Paulsen of Nevadans for the Common Good and Boulder City United Methodist Church, Jennifer Hedland of Boulder City Hospital, Karen Wilkes of Nevadans for the Common Good and St Christopher’s Episcopalian Church, and Deputy Fire Chief Gregeory Chesser of the City of Boulder City’s Fire Department. Upon conclusion of the introductions, the attendees broke into smaller groups of 6-8 people to discuss which issues were of most importance to residents.

From these small groups, most of the discussion centered on homelessness, affordable housing, drug sales and abuse, and mental health services. These seemed to be the topics garnering the most attention. As Barbara Paulsen noted, Many of the issues raised are complex with many parameters and viewpoints. Also many issues overlap or intersect and need to be addressed together and not as independent issues. For example, homelessness, housing, and mental health are interrelated and all three came up at the meeting.”

Neighbors were very engaged in discussing the problems they face as residents. Ideas were shared and some residents even exchanged contact information to keep the discussion going in the weeks to come. The groups then returned and gave a report to the entire group.

A follow up meeting will be scheduled for sometime in July, so stay tuned to find out how you can be a part of solving problems in our community. Jennifer Hedlund remarked, “It is heartwarming to see how the residents care so much about this community.” We can address the concerns if we work together!
