Don’t forget that the time change is tonight…well, technically tomorrow — at 2am.
And because I apparently have room in my head for even more random knowledge I don’t really need — here are some fun facts about the time change!
Why is it at 2 a.m.?
Because for most of the country, it’s probably the least disruptive time of day to do it. Moving time forward or back an hour at that time doesn’t change the date and most people (um, outside of Las Vegas) are sleeping.
Who doesn’t observe it?
Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands.
Why do we bother?
The main goal is to save electricity because there are more hours of natural light, but studies have shown that in reality, the savings are pretty low because even though it’s lighter later in the evening…that just means the lights go on an hour earlier in the morning. Helps on the A/C though.
When did it start?
Off and on since 1883, but pretty solidly since 1966 when Congress enacted the Uniform Time Act. It used to be in April, by the way…but the Energy Policy Act of 2005 bumped it up to March after 2007.
