Super interesting City Council Meeting last night (and I mean it this time) because one of the topics at hand was whether or not to approve an ordinance banning medical marijuana dispensaries in Boulder City.
Based on the levels of applause after various public comments, I’d say most of the people in the audience were in favor of the ban – but there were definitely a few people who spoke out in support of the opening of dispensaries.
The planning commission voted in favor of the ban last week (by a 5 to 2 vote) and the Council did follow that recommendation, so the operation of medical marijuana dispensaries will be prohibited in Boulder City and cardholders will have to continue purchasing their supply from a pharmacy or home-grow their own supply (legal in limited quantities for personal use since 2001).
To be superbly clear, the new ordinance does not ban the usage of medical marijuana…that remains unchanged. It prohibits the opening of a dispensary within city limits to sell it.
BTW, all of this comes about because a state law goes into effect on April 1st that will permit 40 dispensaries to operate in Clark County. From what I gather – a version of this issue might arise again as soon as a dispensary opens up within 25 miles of Boulder City, which is when none of the 20 registered medical marijuana patients living in Boulder City will be permitted to home-grow any longer and must buy their marijuana from a pharmacy or dispensary (which is part of the state law).
