I’ve heard two different people speak with very different (and strong) opinions on this topic in the last 36 hours…so it seems like something to throw out for discussion to the Fans!
The Boulder City Planning Commission approved a proposed amendment last month (by a 4 to 2 vote, it seems) to allow the raising of chickens in residential housing tracts.
Apparently, up to 10 chickens would be allowed, but you couldn’t have any roosters and the chickens have to be confined to a coop or outdoor, fenced area.
The “For” argument was: the provision of “farm fresh” eggs (and chickens on occasion), the revenue from selling eggs to others (since 10 chickens would likely lay 7-10 eggs a day), and the entertainment value of having them.
The “Against” argument was: that chicken coops can be dirty if not cleaned daily, the smell and noise objections of neighbors, and that it would likely drive more coyotes into residential backyards, further endangering pets.
