A Recap on Last Night’s Two Public Input Meetings

Community Meetings Followup Boulder City, NV

Given that there was overlap last night with two important public hearings on two different community projects, we thought we’d recap what was covered.

After all, we love hearing from you folks when you keep us in the loop, (plus we have a few secret sources of our own!) and think it’s important you all have the chance to hear what’s going on!

The Boulder City Think Tank

This is a community share platform that was started last August, 2017, as a way to gather input on how to best market Boulder City after the Interstate 11 interchange opens this fall. It’s hosted and organized by the Chamber of Commerce, and all are welcome.

Last night, Jill Lagan, CEO of the Chamber, reported on a number of projects and we heard from a few other speakers on a variety of items. Topics covered included:

  • Potential new events in town, among them a Pet Parade in the fall
  • Possible re-purposing of some of the classic buildings for new uses, that allows them to be historically preserved, honored and saved, all at the same time
  • The successful roll-out of the Frontline Ambassador Training Program created by the Chamber of Commerce (contact them for more info here.)
  • The return of a Community Policing Program (more on that later!)
  • New Project Proposal: A BC Outdoor Sports Academy

These are just a few highlights of what was covered and shared. New ideas and input are still welcome! Anyone who wishes to know more can email the Chamber here. And again, all are invited to attend the next Community Think Tank Meeting, May 21st!

Boulder City Aquatics and Cultural Center

Last night, those gathered saw a presentation from SH Architecture based upon the feedback that has been provided to them from the community, to date. Here are the most important points from the surveys they have conducted within the community:

  • 75% (overwhelmingly, we’d say) prefer to keep the pool in its current location at Broadbent Park, on the corner of Avenue B and 5th Street.
  • Of all the features listed as most important, topping that list is the need for a competition pool suitable for swim meets.
  • The design will also encompass other multi-use features such as: mixed use and family pool areas, instructional areas for classes, a splash pad, and also the facility will incorporate a fitness center and racquetball courts, to name a few.

With those key points in mind, they have created a current proposed building that will nearly double the existing square footage, to 47,000 (currently the pool is 26,000), with a proposed cost of approximately $20.5 million.

In this design, they would be able to keep the current pool open during construction and build on a site adjacent to the existing pool.

The next steps, according to SH Architecture, will be for them to investigate funding sources, revenue streams and operating costs, and then present all of this information to the Parks & Rec. Department sometime later in March.

They emphasize they would still LOVE to hear from the community, and you can give your feedback on their web site HERE.

We’ll also keep you posted on the next meeting!
