Local Author: Tiane Marie

Local Authors Tiane Marie Boulder City, NV

Today we’re excited to introduce you to another local author, talking to someone some of you may already know – local author Tiane Marie. In case you’ve missed previous articles, we’ve learned that there are nearly two dozen authors locally here in town. We created this series to share the authors stories and to let all of you – prospective readers – get to hear about their works. (If you’ve missed our previous columns, we’ve got links for you at the bottom of this page.)

Please share a short bio to introduce yourself.

Many know me as the Manager of the Museum and Collections for the Boulder City Museum Historical Association . What you might not know is: I am a native Nevadan. I have three children, my eight year old daughter, my eighteen year old tortoise and my two year old Teddy Bear pup. I am an Art Institute and Grand Canyon University Alumna and I plan to pursue my PHD early next year after finishing my current certificate programs. On leisure time you’ll either find me traveling, antiquing, reading, or writing, but most of all enjoying life with my daughter and family.

Please tell us about the book(s) you’ve written and a short synopsis.

Boulder City: Past & Present will be my first published book.
I am currently writing two others but can’t release any details on them yet but I will say: they will both be Historical Non-Fiction. Today, August 30th is the official launch of this book and you can get it on Amazon today at this link HERE.

What inspired you to write it?

This actually bloomed from my Graduate Thesis and other works. A lot of my works focused on our history, from our government, WWII, culture, I even did a few environmental impacts the Dam had on our area. My thesis was focused strongly on the culture of Boulder City and once it was finished it was kind of just sitting there on my shelf with no movement for about five months. I thought giving myself a brain break and working on my other works would guide me on what I wanted to do next with it. That’s when I heard from Arcadia asking if I had any ideas for a possible new book, in other words they were seeking out new proposals. That’s when I sent in my proposal with the idea to be a part of their Past & Present Series.

What do you hope your readers experience or learn from reading your work?

There are quite a few books regarding Boulder City, however, the reality of showcasing the past and what has become of the town would bring a new meaning to preservation and adaptive reuse.
We celebrated our sixtieth anniversary of being an incorporated town in 2020 but Boulder City, Nevada has gone under a lot of changes, including but not limited to: conducting new Historic surveys, adaptive reuse, community growth, and preservation recognition. What I want my readers to take from this book is to get involved with raising awareness about our historic value and helping others understand the importance of our town.

Having recognition helps promote the retention to the significance of our city’s heritage. Boulder City’s heritage doesn’t end at our buildings or sites for it is just the icing to a richer culture. I believe it is a good time for Boulder City to show how far we have come in the past ninety-one years. Most importantly to give our community and visitors new and returning, a fresh perspective that our preservation efforts and care for our community is not wasted.

When and how did you publish it?

Arcadia Publishing.

What events in your life contributed to your becoming an author?

As a collector of over three-thousand books mixed from fiction to non-fiction, my love of books and what they add to society has the biggest role in me wanting to pave my way as an author.

Did you take any formal or informal classes or seminars in writing? What would you say to other would-be authors about the process of writing?

I took a lot of writing courses during my undergrad years and they were the best! It allowed me to explore the many avenues I could do as an author. It was like being introduced to this new world beyond the cover and spine.

In my opinion, everyone is an author if they are passionate about something and write from the heart, you’d be surprised what flows out.

How long have you lived in Boulder City? What do you like most about living here?

I have physically lived in Boulder City for five years now. Before I was able to move into this community, I was lucky enough to have lived right over the border in Henderson and spent most of my days here when I worked at the Hoover Dam and on personal daily trips for events, shopping and exploring.

It has always been about the culture and history that Boulder City represents that makes me proud to be a part of this community.

Any other thoughts you’d like our readers to know about you or your work?

History is all around us and if anyone ever wants to learn more they should never hesitate and start unpacking, I know I always will. I hope everyone who has a chance to read enjoys the history and images!
