Pool Toys Prohibited at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The National Park Service announced the prohibition of devices known as “pool toys” in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Items now prohibited include the following:

  • Inflatable armbands, also known as “water wings”
  • beach balls
  • pool noodles

The prohibition begins immediately and will be in effect for the Labor Day weekend.

“Due to the numerous drownings and rescue operations required, inflatable pool toys are now prohibited at Lake Mead National Recreation Area,” said Acting Superintendent Randy LaVasseur. “Leave them in the pool where they belong. The weather conditions at Lake Mead can change quickly, putting visitors lives in danger. The safety and health of National Park Service employees, visitors, partners, volunteers, and resources is our top priority.”

The used of inflatable recreation items designed to be attached to, or towed behind, a vessel are not included. Also not included in the prohibition are inflatable kayaks, paddle boards, kite boards and float tubes. When using these items, visitors are required to wear a United States Coast Guard (USCG) approved personal floatation device, also known as life vests or life jackets.
