Meet Deputy Police Chief Aaron Johnson

AaronJohnson BCPD Boulder City Nevada

Aaron Johnson has come a long way since his boyhood days in Fairbanks, Alaska. Readers may remember him from his patrol and sergeant days with Boulder City Police Department, where he has served for eighteen years. His role now may be less visible to the public, but the impact is not. He continues to work towards making the department and employees better, while continuing to improve himself.

You may recall that he was fortunate to attend the National Academy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2022. We told you about his experience HERE. Since then, he’s been applying principles and training he received there to operations here in Boulder City.

Deputy Chief Johnson began his law enforcement career in 1999 as a military policeman in the United States Marine Corps, fulfilling a boyhood dream. He always knew he wanted a career in law enforcement and the USMC was his first stop of his career. He later went to work for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and then joined the Boulder City Police Department as a patrol officer. Since joining BCPD, he has flourished in a number of roles. In 2011 he was promoted to sergeant. A few years later, he achieved the rank of lieutenant. He later was promoted to commander. The commander role was later renamed Deputy Chief to reflect local industry standards.

Some of his current roles as Deputy Chief include being a point of contact to other agencies in the valley. He is also a member of Sunrise Rotary and is active with the Boy Scouts. He oversees sergeants and lieutenants as direct reports. He also serves the department in the absence of the chief. His job responsibilities are varied, as it is a small department. You will find him at many of our local events like Spring Jamboree and the Christmas parade, assisting in deploying officers to various locations.

During his lengthy career, he traveled quite a bit. His first duty station was in Yuma, Arizona. He was a military K9 officer in Texas. He also lived in Japan for a while, before separating from the Marine Corps. He and his wife, Shelley, continue to travel domestically and internationally as work permits, often bringing their 7-year-old twin sons in tow.

One of the things that Deputy Chief Johnson is most proud of is the interaction between Boulder City Police Department and other Clark County law enforcement agencies. BCPD frequently sends officers to assist in Joining Forces operations, which focus on traffic safety. This most recent Super Bowl, held at Allegiant Stadium featured a team of officers from Boulder City. This is a testament to the professionalism and training officers receive here, which is a culture fostered by Chief Tim Shea.

Deputy Chief Johnson is one of the city’s true assets and we’re very glad he traded frozen tundra for a warm desert environment!
