The City of Boulder City has released the schedule of events for the 2023 Historic Preservation Day, which will be Saturday, May 13. An additional event will take place on Monday, May 15. The winner of the 2023 Historic Preservation Award will be announced during the May 9 City Council meeting.

Historic Preservation Month began as National Preservation Week in 1973 and in 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month.

The City’s Historic Preservation Committee, in conjunction with the Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City, Friends of Nevada Southern Railway, and other organizations are sponsoring this month’s events.

The main event begins at 8:00AM at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (601 Yucca Street). Refreshments will be served and those present will hear the museum director, Christopher MacMahon, discuss the museum’s ongoing historic preservation efforts. There will also be “posters and information about what’s happening with historic preservation in Boulder City with representatives of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, the Boulder City Art Guild, the Boulder City History and Arts Foundation, members of the Historic Preservation Commission and the City.”

Guests will also be invited to vote on their favorite artwork at the Historic Art Contest: This year’s historic art contest theme is Boulder City’s historic railroads. Sponsored by the BC Art Guild and the BC History & Arts Foundation.

Visitors are then encouraged to visit The Little Busy Bee Shoppe (1306 Boulder City Parkway) a former ticket office for the railroad in Boulder City. Finally, at 11:00AM, visitors will make their way to the National Park Service – Lake Mead National Recreation Area “Safety First” Warehouse (111 Katzenbach Drive), the former Six Companies Railroad Machine Shop.

From 9:30AM to 12:30PM, the BC History & Arts Foundation is again sponsoring TOURS of   the Historic Water Filtration Plant (300 Railroad Avenue).

To conclude this year’s activities, a hike will take place to the historic US Government Railroad Tunnels with a National Park Service – Lake Mead National Recreation Area ranger. This easy/moderate hike will take hikers along the Railroad Tunnel Trail where they will learn about the trail’s history and preservation. Duration is a 3-hour roundtrip to the 3rd tunnel and back. 25-person maximum. Meet at the Alan Bible Visitor Center parking lot (10 Lakeshore Road).
